Install FC3 on SATA (ASRock P4V88 - Chipset VIA 8237)
 

I'm trying to install FC3 on a ASRock motherboard which supports SATA RAID(with VIA chipset 8237), P4 @ 2.8 GHz with 1 Gig RAM, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, 2x120 Maxtor Gig(PATA), 1x Seagate 160Gig(SATA), GeForce 5200FX.

Upon instalation I see anaconda load a sata_via driver, but my sata HD isn't displayed, only my 2 PATA's.

Someone said to disable RAID on BIOS but I have no such option, so I guess I'll have to do it with a RAID0 with one disk, makes sence?

Now, how can I do that?

Will I have to load an aditional driver?
Which? Co's ASRock only provides driver for M$...

Please help me solve this!

On the PATA's I have a working XP Pro instalation, which can't be delete until I make FC3 run to clean them up.

According to Google PATA is the Pacific Asian Travel Association. If you want to play with Linux you are going to have to change some thinking. We deal in files and devices here. ATA,SATA,SCSI,Fibre-Channel, know what you've got then explain it that way. Do you see /dev/hda1, /dev/sda1, /dev/ida/c0d0p1? Fedora's disk druid is very good so if your drives are setup properly they should ALL be there especially if you saw it load the driver on boot..

How can I access DiskDruid from FC3 installation at boot time?

There appears to be a problem with the kernel that's supplied on the Fedora Core 3 distribution CD/DVD. It has real problems recognizing Seagate SATA Hard Drives.

Go to THIS THREAD for further info.

Try booting from a Fedora Core 2 installation CD. If it recognizes the Seagate SATA Hard Drive, then the problem is with the Feodra Core 3 kernel supplied on the installation CD/DVD.

The thread in the above link gives a link to Fedora Bugzilla and has a bug report number. When I originally opened the bug report, I listed the problem as involving Anaconda, the Red Hat installation program. Red Hat almost immediately changed that to being a kernel problem.

My advice would be to install Fedora Core 3 on a PATA hard drive until Core 4 comes out in May. Hopefully they will have the problem fixed by then.

Just keep moving forward through the initial menus - choosing your language etc. - you will end up at a disk partitioning menu. You will have two choices;

1. Let Fedora installer create patritions and format your drives.
2. Partition manually with Disk Druid

Not liking the automatical stuff (past experience with Debian, Slackware, and RedHat), I would choose to partition
manually. This will also allow you to see all the drives that the installer recognizes. I must admit that having done
this on PC's and a few PPC's since 1993, it would be hard for me to explain all the mechanics and philosophies surrounding disk partitioning on unix-like operating systems. Nor would I want to influence you as we all have our stuff setup the way WE like it. So I leave you to get there and check it out, then report back. If you decide to jump right in,
I would suggest at minimum a seperate /boot partition of 500M - 1G and a seperate swap partition of 500M or more.
Disk Druid complains if your swap size doesn't at least match your installed ram size so with the space you've got 1G
of swap couldn't hurt. After a sucessful pattitioning session it will ask you if you want to give any special commands to the boot loader (Grub - default). In your case just let it do it's thing and keep going. If you got that far Grub shouldn't need any special stroking to start you up.

FC3 installed fine on my system.
FC3 complained about bad fat on sda, and I was seeing hda(my XP) that can't be deleted for now, so I wasn't fixing the error, which led to DiskDruid not showing my SATA.

After problem fixed, installation went smoothly without any extra parameters.

Go figure, so Stupid!!!!
