Gnome desktop

After selecting the input method with

Application -> System Settings -> Input Method Switch

1) how to restart X avoiding logout and relogin

[Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Back Space]
seems having no effect

2) how to set the input method permanently? Defaut is 'iiimf'
