So, is there no straightforward solution?

I've searched and read just about all of the threads about the problem and tried just about every suggestion but reinstall. I seem to be unable to do just about anything because i am missing a file called libSM.so.6.

If I am wrong and somebody does have a fairly straightforward solution, please post it here. It's not that I have irreplacable stuff on my Linux drive, it's just that it's really inconveinient to do something as simple as update only to have the OS be made virtually unbootable.

Thanks, I'm off to reinstall now.

Init:Id "x" respawning too fast:disabled for 5 minutes.

Dubya,I was wondering whether you had overcome this problem ? I have exactly the same message!
I am no computer expert and thought that I was well on my way to 'Linux Land' when I loaded the Fedora CD
My computer has 2 hard drives C: running Win 95 and D: which was to run Linux Fedora Redhat.
I'm considering admitting defeat and going back to Uncle Bill's Win95.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

Sorry, I never did figure out how to fix it myself, but I've read other posts where somethings worked for some people, though they didn't work for me.

I do, however, think that I determined the cause and came up with a possible prevention that you can find at:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ghlight=update

This is only something you'd do after reinstalling. Sorry I can't be more help!
