init id 'x' respawning too fast:disabled for 5 mins
 

hi,
i am using fc8 and it encountered this error "INIT id 'x' respawning too fast:disabled for 5 mins"i am unable to resolve the error . i am not able to login as root it says "Login incorrect".i tried logging in single user mode but still i am unable to use command like passwd,chsh
can anybody help me in resolving this error

try editing the file /etc/shadow and remove the password in the "root" user name and then reboot and login as root ...

primarly when i had this error and logged in in single user mode i was not able to see the shadow file in etc directory so i copyed shadow- to shadow file. can u exactly tell wat the problem is and the reasons for the problem. so tht u r suggestion helps me in resolving my problem

Can you check from the terminal for me the following
1) Does /etc/sysconfig/desktop exist
2) Please post the output of /etc/sysconfig/desktop (in other words cat out the file)

**EDIT**
If this file does not exist create it, and put in it the following
DISPLAYMANAGER=KDE

Now go ahead and reboot and see if this fixes your problem
