Improving Fedora performance?
Much as I love Fedora, I'm finding it sluggish running on my laptop, compared to other OS' I've tried.
In short, I want to improve the performance of Fedora. I've already gone into chkconfig and disabled everything I don't need, which has helped a fair bit, but I want to go further and basically strip down Fedora to a minimum. Everything I've googled up so far has really only concerned individual applications as opposed to the OS a whole, so I'm stuck. |
hi there
still what services have u enabled now also?? and why don't u consider compiling ur kernel???? and bring it down to minimum regards |
Well if I felt myself capable of compiling a kernel without setting fire to my laptop, I would-my last few attempts at it met in abject failure.
Below is services as they stand now. If you see room for improvment (probably lots), go wild: Code:
[root@localhost downloads]# /sbin/chkconfig --list |
hi there
u can consider closing down nfs, netfs and other nfs based services and i am not able to post my lisitng here tried the code tag too for 10 times regards |
Done.
Okay, having read the first reply, I really think I should go about recompiling the kernel. I've a horrible stability issue with 2.6.5-1.358 where my machine just switches off randomly, but with 2.6.8-1.521 its perfectly stable...and I have no sound. I need to reach some sort of compromise. :p If you can give me any pointers towards doing it, go wild. :D |
hi there
i think u r installing precomnpiled rpm packages,if yes then frm where did uget that rpm packages?? u should compile urself a kenrel ,starting from the config file of ur 2.6.5 kernel regards |
Straight patches so far via Yum.

hi there
u should go for kernel compiling get urself the latest source from kernel.org and get the config file of ur working kernel and build upon that ur new kernel u can have a look at the kernl comilng tutorial from here http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ghlight=Dr+OZZ regards |
Aye, the compiler is running now. I'll see how it goes this time round.

hi
best of luck for ur adventure and do not loose heart if something goes wrong, it is worth this much effort regards |
Well my usual luck with compiling my own kernel seems to hold-still no sound and crashes, although I've traced the exact problem of them-the kernel isn't running the laptop's fans, causing it to overheat and crash out.
On the flipside, Fedora runs noticeably faster and it boots up in half the time. I'll stick up my logs somewhere if it helps to trace the problems. Either way, back to the drawing board. |
hi there
so what config file are using to compile ur kernel. i advice u to use the config file of the 2.6.5 kernel which was working for ur system regards |
