Is it possible to install a new Linux without losing data or is a reformat always neccesary. I am not sure how Linux works at the kernel level or even if the kernel and the operating system are inseperable. I am using RH 9 but I would like to move away since it is not supported anymore. I thought Fedora might be a good move but not sure what is the best way to move.

Yes, you can install Fedora over top of Red Hat without losing data. However this is dangerous because a mistake can wipe out your data. I suggest that you install Fedora in its own partition(s) and dual boot Red Hat and Fedora. After you get Fedora stable then you can easily move your data to Fedora and then erase Red Hat.
I think what jdriun ment was if he could install Fedora over top Red Hat and keep his installed programs and so on. Not his data (like mp3's, avi's, etc)
I guess because I have the same question. If not I'm terribly sorry :-). Since I'm not going to make a new post (jdruin happens to have my exact problem), can somebody tell me if the former is possible??
I'll try to put things clearer (hope I don't mess it up!): What I want to do is just what I did when I upgraded mi win98 to win2k. I had lots of programs installed so I installed Win2k over the Win98 and it kept all my aldeary running programs.
I don't think this will work con passing from RH9 to Fedora. Though it might from RH7.3 to RH9 (Just guessing again... I have no idea really). If someone knows this for sure please let me (us) know!!!
Thnx!
I yum upgraded multiple machines straight from RH9 to FC1 - no related issues. After a few updates, you may have some of the old "ism's" left over from previous versions.
The key to upgrading is to dig through and note the differences between your configuration and any .rpmnew or .rpmsave files. Porting over the relevant differences is key to keeping current, and in some cases, is required in order to keep a service functioning (correctly).
