i have an activated ethernet card but cannot get internet service

i need some help, i have my eth0 shown as active, but cannot reach any internet sites, when i try to ping, i recieve an error reading "cannot reach host" I've tried using the network guide on this site, but it hasn't seemed to correct any thing. I am trying to connect using Dhcp through a college dorm, any advice on where to start looking for a correction would be greatly appreciated. I'm pretty new to fedora, but i think if im given the right direction, i might be able to figure it out.

I'm using fedora core 1, with the 2.4.22 kernel

any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

as root run "ifconfig eth0" and/or "ifconfig -a", what is the output? I'm curious to know if you got a DHCP address from a DHCP server on your dorm's network. If not, then you may need to manually assign an IP address. But first let's see what ifconfig reveals.

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:07:E9:A9:CB:2E
inet addr:198.82.59.64 Bcast:198.82.59.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

The other stuff looks like all the examples given, and since i'm typing this out on another computer, i'm not typing the other stuff out, unless that's what you need

Well it looks like a real IP address. Now, can you ping an external host?
$ ping yahoo.com
or if that fails,
$ ping 66.218.71.114

If the name fails, but you can ping the IP address, it's a DNS issue...check your DNS server(s). If you can't ping both, then I would guess your default gateway is not working.

Let us know the results.

Thanks,

Dave

alright, when i used 'ping yahoo.com' i got:
ping: unknown host yahoo.com
when i used ping 66.218.71.114, i got:
From 198.82.59.64 icmp_seq=0 destination Host Unreachable

if i let it run, it just continues to spit out that sort of answer.
you mentioned that this probably means something's wrong with the gateway, i have no idea what that means, or how to fix it, so if you could clue me in, i'd appreciate it.

since everything else seems to work, is there anyway to fix the default gateway?

Did you get your IP info from a DHCP server? Do you know what your default gateway is supposed to be? (probably 198.82.59.1 or something) What are you using to configure your gateway, are you using graphical or command-line? I forget the syntax of the command for adding a default gateway in redhat (either ifconfig or route --check the man page, grep "default"). Maybe it's in /etc/sysctl/network ? It's been a while since I've had to do that, and I'm on a gentoo box right now, so it's a little different.

Same problem can't access eth0 from Fedora

I'm having the same problem. I upgraded RH 9.0 to Fedora Core 2 Test 1 and it worked very well except for my network. Now I can see that my ethernet card is working and I can ping and watch the lights blink on my router but nothing happens on the Fedora box and I get "Destination Host Unreachable" My linksys router is my DHCP server and it's working fine. The eth0 won't get an address by DHCP so I manually set the IP to 192.168.1.100. My gateway is configured (192.168.1.1) I've checked the route, I've googled and checked bugzilla for answers but I found nothing.

Try this:
sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_ecn=0

It helped me with the same problem.
