I cant access the application menu

I can use the application/places/system menu when I first start up, but after 2-3 minutes it stops working altogether. No buttons on that taskbar are clickable when that happens...web browser, openoffice buttons etc. It's like that bar is no longer there as far as the OS is concerned. Any ideas?

FC6/Gnome

Come to think of it I have KDE installed. I will check and see if it effects KDE too.

KDE is still working...if it keeps working ok whats the top level yum package name for the gnome desktop? I will just reinstall Gnome if possible. Not that I really dislike KDE, I'm just more accustomed to Gnome. I really don't need all the extras KDE provides, altho there are some things I really like (like rt clicking the desktop and opening a terminal).
