howto remove boot option

hi i have 4 boot options to choose from when i boot and i wonder howto remove then correctly

linux 3.18.3xxxxxx
linux 3.17.8xxxxxx
linux 3.17.4xxxxxx
linux rescue

i did yum remove kernel xxxxxx on the old kernels and the they were removed but i still see the option when i boot
and i see some files in the boot folder which says
vmlinuz-3.17.4.301.fc.x86_64 and
system.map 3.17.4-301.fc21x86_64 and the other ones i removed
how can i remove it so i wont have alot of options after a couple of updates and lots of files laying around?
is there an easier way than just delete each files manually?

with regards

If the package manager doesn't do then you can manually edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg and remove menuentries for those that you don't want.

Please don't make a error in correctly removing the entries else you may not be shown boot options once you reboot.
Though you can manually load the kernel and initramfs.

Also always keep a working kernel and initramfs and boot entries for them for failsafe.

That is a kernel file. After using your process to remove kernel files you don't want, and make sure you get the correct ones, you need to run update-grub. I don't use Fedora myself but, I believe the command is: grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

That command is correct according to the Fedora site below for a non UEFI system and it should create a new grub.cfg without the old entries.

It is generally considered wise to have more than one kernel (and its support files) available in case a kernel update introduces a problem/incompatibility. Has been known to happen. Especially on Fedora ...

Note that removing kernels as you did will not stop the boot list repopulating as new kernels are installed. Yum (currently) defaults to keeping three for the reason above. Best not to screw too much with it - the files occupy minimal space.
