how to upgrade php/apache

I want to add image support to php (the gd module).
The help recommends using the php bundled version, rather than the standard.
Some notes I've found recommend a source code fix to get type 1 font antialiasing and png24 working correctly.

Is there an easy way to configure in the gd module, or do I have to upgrade php and/or apache ? Or should I do that anyway for the latest & greatest ?

Should I be downloading source & using configure & make ?
(I've tried that, but apache2.2 has gone in a new tree, and 2.0 is still being used - how can I find the 'right' config?)

Or should I be using yum ?
That offers version much the same as the ones I've got.

Lost and confused with a new fc4 386 installation.

yum install php-gd
service httpd restart
You're all set.
