How to setup 56K dialup connectiong

Hi folks,

FC6
56K external modem - serial port connection

Just finished installation and unable to setup 56k connection.

On Network Configuration;
Modem port: Modem0 (automatically detected)
Dial mode auto

Trying to activate it prompted;

System-config-network
Code:
/sbin/ifup: configuration for Netvigator56k not found.
Usage: ifup <device name>

On Konsole;
# ifup modem0
Code:
/sbin/ifup: configuration for modem0 not found.
Usage: ifup <device name>
# ifup /dev/modem0
Code:
/sbin/ifup: configuration for /dev/modem0 not found.
Usage: ifup <device name>
However
# ls /dev/ | grep modem0
# ls /dev/ | grep modem
both no printout

Please help. TIA

You need to setup a link between the /dev/modem0 and the serial device
ln -s /dev/tty(serial port) /dev/modem0
you need to be root to create the link. good luck.

Hi Michael,

Tks for your advice.

I have the modem configured by running kppp. It is now running. Internet browsing is without problem.

ln -s /dev/tty(serial port) /dev/modem0
$ ls -l /dev/ | grep modem
No printout

$ ls -l /dev/ | grep ttyS0
Code:
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp     4,   64 Dec  9 05:32 ttyS0
$ ls -l /dev/ | grep ttyS1
Code:
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp     4,   65 Dec  9 05:05 ttyS1
I can't succeed running 'system-config-network" to have the modem setup. I have no idea why it failed. Although it is running but can't be automatically connected at booting similar to broadband.

Tks.

it is so very much easier than that. open your cli. su root. install wvdial. run wvdial. ease of use explains itself. nuff said.
