How to modify the "start menu"
 

Whild using RH9, I found that it seems impossible to modify the "start menu". Today I download the fedora core 1 and try again.
But I don't think it can be modified, is it?

For example, I click the red hat icon, choose "internet" -> right click "mozilla" -> "Whole menu" ->choose to create a new item
(Since I use Chinese, so I don't know the actual name of them in English,
they are translate to English by myself, anyway, you should know what
I mean)
And for example in the "name" I type xmms (just for test)
"command" I type xmms
then it shows something like :
Can't save the modified item. Error while writing to
'applications:/Internet/xmms.desktop'

In MDK, to modify the "start menu" is a piece of cake.
That's why I always use MDK, although actually I like RH more......
I think to modify the start menu should be the fundamental function of a GUI environment....
Is there anyone know how to modify the "start menu" in fedora?

Don't think it is that easy to change the Gnome menus, at least there is none that work... the only way to change it I guess by editing the respective .desktop file .. and to add new item, just created a new .desktop file.

If you want an easy to modify menu do a "custom installation" of Fedora and add KDE as the desktop. GNOME is the only one selected by default. If you have the space you can install both. KDE is my default desktop but sometimes I switch to GNOME. With KDE to modify the menu just "right-click" on the KDE start button (red hat) and select "Menu Editor".

The easiest way I've found to do it is to:
find a launcher in the same place on the 'start menu' as the one that you want to add;
go to /usr/share/applications;
make a copy of the menu item in the same place (need to be root to do this), i.e.
cp redhat-web.desktop thunderbird.desktop
was one that i did to make a shortcut to thunderbird in the internet folder
edit the copy, it's quite obvious what things need to be changed to what for the most part

there's possibly a better way, but this is the way do it on my machine :)

There's an easy, drag and drop way. Open up the file manager, and enter applications:// in the location. This will give you a list of all the menu categories and entries. Drag and drop and edit from there.

I set up another user profile to experiment with this, so I could screw it up to my heart's content. :-)

Also, try smb:// in the file manager.......
