You can just use the update manager. Type yum install mplayer or yum install xine

Check the Stanton Finley guide at http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_cor...s.html#MPlayer . I should be enough to get you all setup for multimedia.

Fedora Core 5 Linux Installation Notes

Try this: http://www.stanton-finley.net/fedora...ion_notes.html

It has step-by-step instructions for configuring yum and installation of many useful stuff.

Lol, yes, seems like a popular site for Fedora Core 5, doesn't it?

While its good to learn and understand Yum, and Terminal commands, etc. Fedora Frog makes installing several apps very easy(I can only presume Mplayer/Xine are among the players that it will install)...

Another very helpful link, that will literally talk you through installing these programs via Yum...

http://www.fedorafaq.org -Very good Fedora FAQ

You are probably already using your root account instead of a normal user account.

Can you be more specific, what error?

#yum -y install xine-0.99.4-7.fc5.src.rpm is the syntax.

OMT don't use yum to install rpms.
Code:
#rpm -ivh xine-0.99.4-7.fc5.src.rpm
OMT again, follow that guide to the T.

To install from net repo,
Code:
#yum -y install xine
Here's an additional link http://home.gagme.com/greg/linux/fc5-tips.php

I have had issues under Fedora Core 5 and 6 trying to install Xine media player through Yum.

While ---

yum install xine-libs-*

--- gives me the xine libraries and architecture, the gui installation isn't so straight forward.

yum install xine-ui

--- results in a broken xine user interface. It'll show up in the drop down menu, but when you start the program, it immediately states that it cannot find codecs, and it then locks up and goes haywire. This has happened to me on 4 different machines running two different versioins of Fedora Core (5 and 6 respectively).

My solution was to download the source code for Xine.

I compiled the xine-libs-* library from source, and then compiled and installed xine-ui-* from source.

That solved the issue, and Xine ran like a champ!

I then, for sake of shits and giggles, tried installing the xine-libs through yum, and compiling xine-ui from source.

This also worked, which means that the issue that I was having was due to the yum installation of the user interface, not the libraries.
