Yes, that should work - try Smart Boot Manager. It's available on sourceforge.net

I suspect that you will be hard pressed to install fedora core, even in a stripped down for on a 486 box (if someone has had success with this, please correct me).

This does not mean that you cannot run linux. Given the state of hardware that you are working with I sould suggest that you aim to use a distro that is focused in being very light weight, such as damn small linux.

http://damnsmalllinux.org

On their FAQ page they have an entry on installing DSL (Damn Small Linux) from floppies alone:

http://damnsmalllinux.org/install_from_floppy.html

Or they have an option on how to create a boot floppy:

http://damnsmalllinux.org/faq.html#floppy

There are other options as well.

Good luck,

SBM didnt work for this box. I got error message:
Code:
SBMK BAD!
thatz all, so any ideas?

I just wanted install basic system without any desktop - only terminal and ssh is that what i need... Im going to use it for a ftp, apache and windows file sharing box. So i thougt maybe i will get it work on fedora or centos...

Does DSL can handle all of it?

DSL has an ssh server and client built in. If memory serves it also has a http deamon that can provide basic hosting needs (not apache though). I also seem to recall that it has a samba client installed. You will need a system acting as a Samba server so that it will intergrate into your windows systems. Although you may be able to install a more fullly functioanl samba componet.

But with built in FTP server functionality, it is not to difficult to use this OS a a storage bin for other systems.

Happy hunting.

fedora cannot run on 486PC
if you cannot boot from ur cdrom you still can boot from your floppy drive and type linux askmethod command then select your cdrom as your OS source.
