How to dual boot linux and windows installed on 2 hard drives?

Hi everyone!

I know that I'm asking for something that has been addressed and answered before but when I checked those threads, I didn't understand the solutions that were being proposed.

So here's the deal. I have Windows XP installed on the master HD and Fedora Core 6 installed on the slave drive. When I want to use one or the other, I usually change the boot order in BIOS. However, I find that annoying to do it very time I want to switch OS, so what has to be done to get dual boot?

As I've read in other threads, the solution would involve using the FC6 install CD and modifying GRUB but that's all I understood. Didn't dare to make tests on my own before knowing full well what I was doing by fear of messing my system.

Can anybody help, please?

Thanks for your time.

Boot into linux and edit /boot/grub/menu.lst file and add an appropriate line to it and set the BIOS boot order to boot from the slave (linux) drive. When the GRUB menu shows up, select windoz to boot into windoz or linux to boot into linux...

Quote:
title Windowz
chainloader (hd1,0)+1
Don't worry, you won't be messing up your system as all you have to is to modify menu.lst as said above. Make sure you replace 'hd1' above with the drive number for your windoz drive.

Talking Problem solved!

Wow. So simple. If I had known, I would've asked a long time ago. Thank you very much kevkim!

Now I have dual boot but it didn't work on the first trial. I had to tweak on it a little. But it finally worked once I added the following in the menu.lst file:
Quote:
title Windows XP
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader (hd1,0)+1
Once again, thank you very much!

Oh ! Yeah ! I didn't put enough time into thinking the right solution for your case, You have windoz on another disk and hence, you'll need that 'rootnoverify' and 'makeactive'....

Anyways, glad it helped you ! :-)
