I did a standard install if Fedora 8, accepting the "customise later" option, but doing that doesn't seem obvious.
A lot of what I want (Openoffice, scribus etc) are on the distro DVD, but how do you actually do a local install from DVD? I have tried to use "yum local install xxx" but the DVD probably needs to be the current dir and for the life of me I can't seem to be able to do that.
The most basic approach would be to copy all the packages from DVD to a dir on hard disc and then do a local install from there, but there must be a way of doing it directly from the DVD.
I should add that I would prefer to install what need from the DVD rather than via the internet, as there are quite a few packages and my download limit is quite finite.
I guess I am missing something here. Hope someone can point me in right direction.
OK, I tried using "Add/Remove Software", firstly without the DVD in the drive, then inserting it in the drive while the application was running, but that didn't show any signs of knowing about the DVD. I then quit the application, inserted the DVD and then started the application. Still no signs of any knowledge of the DVD. "Computer" shows the DVD loaded. When I select any software that isn't installed it tries to download it.
Could you please run through the steps you go through to see the DVD contents in "Add/Remove Software"?
As usual I am probably missing something simple here.
From the "Add/Remove Software" the "Package Manager" window opens and click on "Edit" and then "Repositories". You should see a selection "Install Media" and a blank check box.
You can deselect the repos that require going online and just use the DVD. When you are finished adding additional packages you can deselect the "Install Media" and reselect the default repos.
I think that if you leave the "Install Media" enabled everytime you go to update it will ask for the DVD and stall there.
