What is the email provider you are using?
is it hotmail, gmail, yahoo, ....?

the configuration differs from one to another

Yahoo does not provide free pop3 or imap services but there is a work around for thunderbird

http://webmail.mozdev.org/webmail.html

on this link you will find an add-on for thunderbird and instructions on how to use it
