How safe is it to "Upgrade Installation" with the FC3 installation cd media, up from an already working FC2 installation? And what happens to apps/scripts that were not installed via rpm? Do they cease to work/exist? Or do they keep on going?

I have just done an upgrade from Fedora core 2 to Fedora Core 3 and I had a few programs that I had installed myself stop working, mostly due to libraries (what do you really call them?) being updated and the programs still needing/looking for the old ones. Actually the Fedora installation program warned me that this might happen. Some programs were compiled from source. Others were downloaded and installed in binary form and some were installed as RPMs in Fedora Core 2. Anyway, I managed to get everything working again as can be seen in the thread I started:
