How does Fedora8 organize its directory?

Hi!
i've found F8's directory organization somewhat puzzling.
for example, i was told in many cases to go into this directory:
Quote:
#cd /usr/src/linux
but there are only two subdirectories under /usr/src, which are kernels and redhat
who can explain this? thanks!

There should be a /usr/src in F8

Making major edits to a thread totally kills any context btw.

What tells you to look in /usr/src/linux? Nothing I've come across.

/usr/src/redhat is the root RPM building area (which you shouldn't use) and kernel sources are in /usr/src/kernels/%{version}. Previously a kernels source would be in /usr/src/linux-%{version} with the most recent compiled one having a symbolic link to /usr/src/linux, that's why you get directed to that directory.

make a softlink

Make a soft-link from /usr/src/kernels/2.6.24.3-12.fc8-i686/include/linux (or whatever version of the kernel is installed) to /usr/src/linux.

Fedora's concept makes sense to me as it allows to have different kernel versions available in a predictable manner. Tools like VMware that need constant kernel module re-compilation with each new kernel have no problem finding the proper location.

Other than that, I'm not sure what you expected from /usr/src. This has been around even when Fedora didn't exist. There are no rules carved in stone how to populate it.
