How do I upgrade the kernel from recovery mode?

I've gotten my system booting off my new SATA HD on an Intel ICH5 controller under Mandrake 9.2 and SuSE 8, but have been unable to get it running for Fedora 1. It installs Fedora fine, but when I go to boot the freshly installed OS, it kernel panics, or hangs on something with ATAPI/IDE depending on which of the 2 default kernels (normal and SMP) I boot too.

I'm assuming I just need to upgrade to a later 2.4, or possibly even the 2.6 kernel, however I'm having problems figuring out how to get a new kernel onto the system. I've been booting off the install CD and going into recovery mode, but RPM just throws errors when I try to use it to install one of the new ones in RPM form.

Should I try and build a kernel on my other Fedora box and then move it to my SATA one? Any other suggestions for getting Fedora up and running on an Intel ICH5 SATA controller?

Specifically what errors do you get from RPM from exactly what commands? If you are multi-booting other Linuxes, you should be able to download whatever kernels you want. Just mount the Fedora partition and save the files to it.

As for using RPM to upgrade from rescue mode (which I'm just starting to figure out is your real problem as you stated it; sorry I'm running slow!) Mount your Fedora partition if it isn't automatically found. Then use `chroot /path/to/Fedorapartition` before running RPM. With any luck that will work. Post back details and results please!

I've got Mandrake 9.2 up and running now, as it seems to work with the SATA setup off the bat. Still like Fedora better though.

I don't have the broken install anymore, but I believe it was saying something about corrupt RPM's, despite the fact that they MD5 out fine.

Didn't think about the chroot, the rescue install mounted the default install to /mnt/SysImage or something.

My problem is default Fedora core 1 no workey with Intel's ICH5 SATA controller. Of course I'm getting all sorts of secondary problems trying to breathe life into a broken install.
