I'm having a similar problem I think. Right now my sound isn't working at all, but it during the installation of Fedora Core 2 i heard the test sound. When I open my volume control i have an OSS mixer and an ALSA mixer (both have all settings except mic on max.) I thought FC 2 came with ALSA as the default, but I'm now so sure anymore. After reading a lot of fourms on how to solve my sound problem one solution was to move the OSS directory because it is loaded on startup and if you move it the pc cannot find it and therefore doesn't load it. The wierd thing is after I moved that directory and restarted when I go to the soundcard detection gui and play the test sound I immediately get the question "did you hear the test sound play" as if it didn't even try to play it. This leads me to believe that my computer was using ALSA. I'm so confused

.....sorry I was not able to help you with your problem, good luck

Test sound in system-config-soundcard uses OSS compatible /dev/dsp device. ALSA devices are located in /dev/snd/*.
