how can i install / create a really dark theme in gnome - compiz?

hello there!
i really like the dark background of my console
and i would like smth really dark for my window manager too...

i actually asked in the title about gnome + compiz cause thats the combination i am using right now.
but i am also using xfce at times and even KDE... is there a universal theme or smth to get that lovely dark background in my desktops?

note that i tried downloading dark themes from online, and while the title of my windows does change to what is seen at the screenshots, the main window area does not...

so what do i do?
thank you for your help

I find (primarily a KDE user) that find/change the windows/decorations to the way I want them (no round corners, no silly little tabs sticking up from the windows) and then change the colours.

I'd probably want to do something different if I had a hundred workstations that I use.

yes but where do you change the colours from...
in emerald themes manager i didn't identify a colour palette responsible for altering the background colour of windows...
