how can I delete an icon on the desktop?
I cannot delete any icon on the desktop
I tried to "move to trash" and cut and paste
neither of them work. why?

try deleting from the terminal and see if that works out.
cd ~/Desktop
ls -la
and delete the icons you see there.

there are 3 files under ~/.Desktop
redhat-web.desktop -> /usr/share/desktop-menu-patches/redhat-web.desktop
gnome-terminal.desktop
.directory
I could not find the icon name I wanted to delete

you have .Desktop not Desktop ie a full stop in front, did you have that when you did cd?
And do you mean desktop our one of the panels

it was a typing mistake. There is any full stop in front of Desktop, sorry about that.
Finally I deleted the whole Desktop folder and restore.
Linux is weird, I don't want to waste my time to deal with a little icon

If the icon was on the top or bottom panels you can just right click over the top of it and remove.
