Hidding programs??

I have my own version of Firefox and Acrobat Reader in my home dir on my University account since the versions they use are a bit old. While I can get my firefox working with no problem, its when Firefox loads up a pdf, it uses the old acroread. I have my own custom path and I was wondering, while I don't want to just remove the location for the old acroread from the path, since it contains other programs, is there a way I can hide the old acroread?

My University is using Fedora core 3(I think) with tcsh as the shell. Any ideas? or am I being too demanding? haha

Rename it and create a link with the same name pointing to the new one
