HELP: yum, apt-get, synaptic developers woes :S

I notice that apt/synaptic is getting more and more unsupported as time goes by. There's seems to be lots of dependencies errors/bugs when am updating.

So I take it yum is still the only reliable automatic updating tool ... but text-based. Am wondering if there's a way to make yum fully update, but at a partially, incrementally, steps, pace. Basically I gave 3GB of partition for linux on my laptop. While this is enough for a good development workstation install, I get around 650MB free space. When I run a full update (yum or apt/synaptic) it HAS to download 430MB in ONE go, before installing. Hence, ofcourse when installing it would unpack this 430MB and probably would be twice the size unpacked (800MB).

I had to manually yum/apt/synaptic update selected packages, maybe 5 or 10 at a time... opposed to the full 100 odd updates. It would be nice in future if yum/apt/synaptic had a function/feature to do a full update, but at a incrementally pace. If you get what I mean?

"#yum install yumex" that command will get you a grafical yum alot like synaptic. ive been getting alot of errors running synaptic after installing things they dont work i think alot of that has to do with breezy but who knows.
