help change charset in gnome

Is it possible to set the language locale so that my filenames will display properly (and I will be able to see ex. pictures). I need to change it to iso8859-1, and all the threads I've found about this has confused me more than they helped.

Anyone know a simple way of doing this?

take care

do anybody know what gnome means?
it's a dwarf living in the inner part of the earth to guard treasures ! I think Gnome developers want Gnome to live in the inner part of linux and guard all programs
