hard disk install, without burning CDs!
 

Im running FC2. i want to update to FC6. I have the CD-ROM ISOs dowloaded to anouther VFAT partion.
How can i update my OS?
i Read in my Lunix guide that the ISOs need to be on either :scratch: a FAT, ext2, or ext3 partion to hard disk install, is this true?
andit says that i should create an installation startup CD-ROM/boot USB drive to start the install, do i have to do this?

I've never done it, but here's how I think the process goes: first you need to somehow be able to start the installer (that's what they talked about). When it starts you're (or should be) asked for where the installation media resides. In this case you would be able to access the partition where the media (images) are, that's why it's fat, ext2 or ext3 (those are common filesystems). Probably, depending on the installer, you need to mount them to a directory manually and tell the installer to look for the media from that directory (I'm not sure if the installer can handle this itself, though it should be possible, so that you could just point the image files).

You could also try a system upgrade trough yum but from FC2 to 6, over more than one version, it might prove difficult and anyway I don't recommend it if you have all the stuff for a "clean" install. If you have a spare USB disk and can boot from such devices or have a RW cd or something available, create the boot disk, start the installation and use the images you have -- no need to burn them all on discs.

thankx i will try to make a boot disk and try to find the ISOs with that boot cd.
But besides that your comment didn't help much, i tryed this allready with the FC2 disk booted to it and issued linux askmethod but i couldn't find the ISOs

Why not burn CDs?? If you don't have a burner, they are dirt cheap.

Another option is to simply order CDs (Distrowatch lists many sources) or get them from magazines.

Hello hardfluidity,Yes, I have done it many times. And yes, the ISO files must be stored on an ext2, ext3, or vfat partition that will not be reformatted during installation. You only need the first two CD ISO files to do a basic installation with "Office and Productivity". You can add other packages later with yum.

Yes, you need some kind of boot disk. The boot.iso file available from the Fedora download server will work to make a bootable CD. I personally like to use a GRUB boot floppy that I create myself. To do that, I also have to download vmlinuz and initrd.img from the Fedora download server to the hard drive. The bootable floppy has only the GRUB stage files and a simple grub.conf that I write myself to start vmlinuz on the hard drive.I tried that and couldn't make it work either (I still have FC2 disks). I also tried booting with FC4 and FC5 disks. But only the first FC6 disk would boot and "see" the FC6 ISO files on my hard drive partition. So, if you want to boot with a CD, make a boot CD with the boot.iso file or the first FC6 CD or the Rescue CD all available from the Fedora download server.
