Grub will not load SCSI NTFS drive

I have a Dell Precision 530 dual processor, running FC5.

The Drive configuration is FC5 is installed on an 20 gb IDE/SATA Hard drive, while my windows XP is installed on a 79gb SCSI hard drive. Grub allows for both drives to be shown as options, and will load the Linux drive no problem. However when I select the option for the Windows drive It just hangs after "Chainloader +1".

I have tried to update the kernel using a NTFS application
"yum install kmod-ntfs-smp"

I also tried the installer from
linux-ntfs.org

The bios will boot the windows partition just find I change the boot order from BIOS drive to the actual SCSI hard Drive (in boot order).

I have tried to update the Grub.conf file with examples like
MAP (HD1) (HD0)
Map (HD0) (HD1)

and also tried to update the /etc/fstab file but still no luck.

Navigation from FC5 I can navigate the NTFS drive from the /mnt/windows dir that the linux-ntfs.org site mentions, so it does appear to be able to the READ the NTFS information.

Any clues as to what do next would be appreciated.

Hi

Welcome to LQ. I am assuming this is an external usb drive that you have Windows installed on. The BIOS gives you a first boot option, but, even though it shows up in grub, the BIOS can only boot from one location at a time (hard drives or usb, but not both.) The reason grub is giving that message is that it is looking for Windows on the drive that the BIOS is set to boot from. With that setup, I believe you are going to have to reset the BIOS each time you choose a different OS.

Hope this helps

Bob

The drive (Fedora) is an EIDE/ ATA drive, the windows drive (XP) is a SCI (68pin) drive. Both drives are internal and not USB. I does seem to work to manually load the drive from the BIOS but the nice thing about the boot loader is that I could reboot the system remotely and know which OS will always boot by default.

I did notice that the drive that the GRUB file thinks is the SCSI (I think its HD1,0 while the ATA is HD0,0) gives an error when you load grub and type hd1 and then tab. I am not on the machine but I think it says something along the lines of Cant find drive.

Any other ideas? Its odd that the computer can 'Browse' the NTFS directory when you are in the GUI of Fedora.

The NTFS module is simply for accessing the NTFS files through Linux, it will not have any affect on the boot process. Post the results of

df

and your grub.conf file.

We might be able to zero in on the problem from this.
