grub-install hangs on FC3 with no floppy

This was a strange bug I found in FC3 when adjusting my boot configuration. Thought it might help someone:

On a new install of Fedora Core 3 without a floppy drive, the grub-install command hangs due to the presence of an incorrect fd0 entry created by anaconda in the grub device.map file. If you remove the incorrect fd0 entry, grub-install works normally. Procedure:
1. Make backup of device.map file with: cp device.map device.map-old
2. Open the /boot/grub/device.map file with text editor
3. Delete the entry for fd0
4. Save changes
5. Re-run grub-install

*Only do this if you do not have a floppy drive and the grub-install command hangs.

can't you also grub-install --no-floppy and it won't probe for it?
I'm not sure if this would do the same, since I've never had to do the procedure.

I believe it should. I was actually about to try that (currently doing grub-install --recheck to see if grub incorrectly maps fd0 also), since the--no-floppy option simply has grub ignore the device.map entry which seems to be the problem here (the incorrect fd0 entry causes grub to incorrectly map the BIOS drive).

Turns out the --no-floppy option doesn't help at all. grub-install --recheck also puts an incorrect entry for fd0 in device.map (the original file had a comment stating it was created by anaconda). It's also turns out that grub-install will eventually finish running after about 15 minutes. For a comparison, removing the fd0 entry from device.map causes grub-install to finish in 1-2 seconds.

strange that --no-floppy does that, it's not supposed to even probe for a floppy, but fedora does things it's own way somtimes.. . I didn't have any problems on my laptop without a floppy drive, but as I said, it was installed automatically during the initial installation.
if I'm ever to upgrade it or go back to using lilo I guess I'll have to remember this.
