grub got overwrite by fedora c3

hi,

I have tried to install Fc3 linux on a separate volume (out of raid array). But after reboot i find my old grub menu is gone(mainly debian and ubuntu entry) but only fedora c3 menu. Isn't FC suppose to create some kind of chain load menu?

Now, i can see from the boot Hd(2,0) meaning maybe my original hd(0,0) grub maybe still there. How do i put the 2 meun in one? Or at least getting back my old menu?

Thank in advance

Do you have the discs for your original primary install? If so, then that may be the easiest way to get your deb/ubu grub started again. If you do that you will lose fc grub. I would recommend putting the fcgrub on the mbr of your secondary, and then adding the entry for it in your deb/ubu grub. I am running a Suse(primary 40GB drive)/FC4 (secondary 13Gb drive). I tried to do what you did, but suse ate fc grub every time, so I had to figure out how to write a workable entry in the grub boot menu. This took a while since I am a newbie. I will post it for you in the hopes that it will help:

title SUSE LINUX 9.2
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 selinux=0 resume=/dev/hda1 showopts splash=silent desktop elevator=as
initrd (hd0,1)/boot/initrd

title Floppy
root (fd0)
chainloader +1

title Failsafe -- SUSE LINUX 9.2
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 showopts ide=nodma apm=off acpi=off vga=normal noresume selinux=0 barrier=off nosmp noapic maxcpus=0 3
initrd (hd0,1)/boot/initrd

title Memory Test
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/memtest.bin

title Fedora Core 4
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

Hopefully, someone with more experience than I will have an idea how to sort out the second OS on your primary. HTH

Seems FC only recognises Windoze installs - hence no entries for your other Linux installs.
Poor installer IMHO.

You'd have a couple of options - at least;
- go look on the original hard-disk - pull the stanzas from the grub.conf (or menu.lst), and add them to the FC3 version.
- boot from the CD for the distro that was previously used, get into recovery mode and simply re-install grub to the MBR. You'd need to manually add the FC entries.

In future when installing distros, I'd suggest you always choose to install the boot loader to the (root) partition rather than the MBR. Keeps the old/current system as-is, and you can add entries for the new system when convenient.

Each of you Linux has its own boot menu which can be restored any number of time.

To include FC3 in your original Grub menu you have to add additional entries.

There are two ways to skin this cat.

(1) Stick with FC3 Grub menu and add the rest of the systems to it.

(2) Restore your last Grub menu (by Debian or Ubuntu) and put FC3 into it.

The "Just booting tips" in my signature has all your answers.

You should make a Linux "chainloadable" first using Task D2 or D3. Then You you add that Linux to the selected Grub menu.lst using Task E2.

In your case having a bootable Linux is the same as booting via a Live CD.

As a newbie, I did everything by gui. Your cli hints look like they would make things a lot easier! I will be messing with my system to try some new things in a couple of weeks, so I will give your hints a try.
