Check your run-level
I would assume it is because you are in run-level 3 and not run-level 5.
Check the file /etc/inittab
What does it say in the id:X:initdefault section?
If the number there is 3, change it to 5 so it reads like this:
id:5:initdefault:
Also, do this command right after the system boots and paste the output:
# runlevel
If you are already in run-level 5, i would assume X is not configured properly. Post the output of /etc/X11/xorg.conf and the command # lspci if you are in 5 and not 3.
