gnome-vfs and fam

I am trying to get rid of packages that are unnecessary, however the file alteration monitor (fam) has a dependency of gnome-vfs. I want to keep the gnome-vfs package but I wonder if anyone knows how to remove the fam package and leave the gnome-vfs package. If I can remove the fam and leave gnome-vfs will this harm the gnome-vfs package to operate properly.

The file alteration monitor tells gnome when a folder or file has been altered so that it can update Nautilus straight away, but it has to be running in the background all the time and could potentially be a security problem. Gnome runs fine without it, you just have to click refresh to see any changes in a folder.
