gnome mutes sound

Running Fedora 4 I installed alsa-driver and updated alsa-lib and alsa-utils to improve
sound quality (it worked!). Now it seems that I must rerun "alsactl restore" after reboot
even though I modified the sound part of /etc/modprobe.conf like so:
alias snd-card-0 snd-ens1371
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-ens1371 index=0
install snd-ens1371 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-ens1371;{ /usr/sbin\
/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }
remove snd-ens1371 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-ens1371

Googling around I get the idea this seems somehow to be the fault of the gnome volume
control. Any ideas appreciated.
