Angry Gnome Desktop icons

Hi,
I recently shifted from using KDE to Gnome. In FC2 i am facing some problems.
Firstly there are icons of Computer,Home,Trash on my desktop which show no write permission image ( a pencil with a cross ) on them. How do i get rid of this and also how do i delete these icons from my desktop.
Secondly in Gnome whenever a cd is inserted it automatically gets mounted but there is no way to automatically mount a floppy. I have to log in as root and mount/unmount it manually.
Can i hav an icon on the desktop with mount/unmount feature in the right click.
Thnx.

for your floppy disk mounting problem, I suggest using a gdesklet called diskmount. I use it for my cdrom, dvd and floppy. For your root problem, edit your /etc/fstab and change owner to user in the floppy line.

Open the "Computer" icon, right click on "Floppy" and choose "Mount Volume" To unmount, do the same steps.

Just for better understanding have a look at this screenshot :

http://serv1.freeimageupload.net/uploads/1096030670.png

By the way my fstab looks like this :

Code:
LABEL=/                 /                       ext3    defaults        1 1
none                    /dev/pts                devpts  gid=5,mode=620  0 0
none                    /dev/shm                tmpfs   defaults        0 0
none                    /proc                   proc    defaults        0 0
none                    /sys                    sysfs   defaults        0 0
/dev/hdd5               swap                    swap    defaults        0 0
/dev/hdd2               /mnt/dump               vfat    gid=500,uid=500 0 0
/dev/cdrom              /mnt/cdrom              udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0                /mnt/floppy             auto    noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0

Try checking the ownership, permissions for the Desktop folder (& subfolders/files therein) in your home directory. Open xterm & try the following commands:

Suppose your username is : foo
Suppose the location of the Desktop folder is : ~foo/Desktop [I "think" this is the location]

$ cd ~foo [presuming that's your home directory]
$ chown -R foo:foo Desktop
$ chmod -R u+w Desktop

If this doesnt work, I'm lost... :-(

HTH
