Just installed FC3 and after a few days of using it and applying yum updates, it stopped showing my background image and all of the icons that were there before. the last update I installed was the most recent gaim update (yesterday or so) - this was done using yum update. did not specify anything specific.
Also, ever since this happened, I cannot shutdown from gui, only shutdown -h now.
Anybody have any ideas?
edit:
there is no interactivity with the desktop itself, only windows that are open. no right-click or any other clicking... the panel is fine, although shutdown is a problem as stated above. individual software works as it should.
If I were you I would just remove everything in that profile and start fresh. After that you can log in as root on the command line to remove that user (1st you need to copy any important files you have saved to a safe place). The command should be /usr/sbin/userdel <username> then delete the folder in the home directory. then use the command /usr/sbin/useradd <username> . I had to do this when I first logged in because something happened and I was getting similar problems as yours. Sorry it's not a great answer, but it's the one I got.
Only one question then: will I be able to create the same user again without losing the ability to use the files I created as that user? I only have one user, and all of the files in my home dir are associated with that one.
First follow seabass's instructions. I actually meant to suggest that first, but forgot.
Before you delete anything you need to copy important files to a safe spot. Music files, movie files, Open office files, etc. If you go through with the deleting proccess then you will basically loose settings you have changed with that profile. Desktop icons will be in their default location, files will open with their default program (if you've changed that)
I don't know what all you have uninstalled on your computer but I listed out every rpm with the word gnome in it. I'm not sure but if I where you I would "yum install " every one of those. Also you should "yum install gdm". That might add it back to the list. You might want to use the command "rpm -qa |grep gnome" to see what you have installed. Also you might want to see what is in the file /etc/sysconfig/desktop. When I view the contents of that file I saw DESKTOP="GNOME" I'm not positive what that file controls, though.
I' ve got the same problem - new FC 3 - and after updates this... limited interactivity I checked this and it is not just local users's profile, i thought its because of my experiments (some strange software) and I couldn't fix it so i just give up, then reinstalled FC3, after reinstall i made only this activities: installed apt-get, then Synaptic, apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, then restart X-windows and gnome has again this limited interactivity maybe anybody knows how to cope with this, and not by reinstaling fc3 every day or not just avoiding updating system...
My first Yum update included the repo from livna. My second did not, and seems to have updated quite a bit on the fresh install. It looks like a fresh install defaults to SELinux, where it did not on the upgrade. Also, gpg keys were installed after the fresh FC3 install. Its been about three days.
Unfortunately, I may have to wait to run this distro until further notice. Maybe Ubuntu is the way to go. I am only using this for a desktop/samba server, so it may not be necessary for FC at all. I hate to admit defeat...
Do you have SELinux running right now? I don't know what all SELinux would cover but if it is running you might try to disable it, reboot and then go into GNOME. It's a longshot, but who knows.
