Getting SPDIF output with gstreamer in FC5

I just upgraded to FC5 and as expected it broke a good many things. The only one I can't seem to get started again is getting spdif output from my gstreamer based audio players i.e. banshee and/or rhythmbox. I have regular audio output to my headphones with gstreamer apps. I also have SPDIF output using aplay -D hwplug:0,2 and with xmms configured to use the same output. I've tried experimenting with gstreamer-properties going to oss and esd outputs with no success. If anyone can give me a hint as to how to get gstreamer setup to use the same output as I've been able to use with aplay and xmms that'd be great. Otherwise there's always rollback I suppose.

specs:

nforce 3 250 mobo with Realtek655 chip
using the intel 810 driver with alsa
gstreamer 0.10 as up to date with the FC5 install
alsa latest version as with FC5 install 1.0.11rc4

In case anyone is having this issue I found a solution at the MythTV wiki. In the article on configuring digital sound is an good .asoundrc file that solved my problem. I'd post the url but I can't
