Unhappy gdm not finding nvidia module in kernel

GDM seems not to be finding the nvidia module in the kernel.
I've followed the instructions in Stanton Finley's Installation notes to get FC5 installed. I updated to the
latest kernel (2.6.17-1.2174_FC5), booted this new kernel,
and then installed kmod-nvidia from the livna repository.
Now when I reboot, gdm fails with the following log
messages shown below.

I am running an old nvidia card (32MB Diamond Viper TNT2/Ultra), if this makes any difference.
What can I do about this? Help!

I rebooted into single-user mode and checked with lsmod. Sure enough, the nvidia module was not present. So then I rebooted normally and asked the system to
reconfigure the desktop. I had to run system->administration->display and
logout/login to get a usable screen resolution.

This allowed me to run a 'yum -y --enablerepo livna list kmod-nvidia'
which showed that it was installed. So then I tried removing it and reinstalling
it with yum. The removal went fine, but this is what the reinstall showed:

I guess I missed the error message the first time around. So this perhaps
explains why the nvidia module never gets into the kernel. But then I looked
and found that /lib/modules/2.6.17-1.2174_FC5/extra/nvidia/nvidia.ko really
does exist. Is there a workaround that I can use to fix this?

Evidently my hardware requires use of Nvidia's legacy driver.

From Nvidia:

The following GPUs are no longer supported in the regular NVIDIA Unified UNIX Graphics Driver. Instead, these GPUs will continue to be supported through a special "Legacy GPU" driver that will be updated periodically to add support for new versions of Linux system components (e.g., new Linux kernels, new versions of the X server, etc).

The Ubuntu distribution provides special instructions for installing
these drivers as provided by Nvidia at
http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Latest_Nvidia_Dapper.
NOTE that those drivers will work only with kernels from Ubuntu
repositories. I don't know whether livna provides these for Fedora.
At this point I'm ready to bail on Fedora and see how far I can get
on Ubuntu.
