ftp download other server complete tree + packaging
Hi guys,
I just installed a fedora core 5 server. One of its responsibilities is to make a backup form another server via ftp. So first i played a little with duplicity but I don't like so much.
The most things if found on the internet is about how to make a backup from my computer. But I want to download the whole tree (plus data :-)) from a foreign server (/) and then making eventually a zip or tar or another compressed file of this downloaded backup.
Could somebody gibe me a clue?
greetz Stephan

FTP isn't good at recursive downloads, so
2 clues:
scp -r
or
rsync
--- rod.

i guess its a server so this might not help but, gftp will copy folders recursively, i have done it to get lfs/blfs for ftp site and it worked fine, but if you are going without graphical interface i guess that useless.

server to server
Maybe my question was unclear I am on server A and I want to get ab backup from server B owith ftp through the internet on my server A. The best way should be a cronjob but which program can I use?
rsync is very complicated to me and I spent a lot of time to read about rsync but it is still confusing especially because if have only access to the files on Server B via ftp.
thx

If you only have acces via ftp, then use ftp. Use a GUI version to provide recursive downloads. You will have to look out for circular references, and the likes of that. You will create a LOT more traffic than you need to. You will have a poor record of what you have done. You will be exposing your server and client to a fairly insecure protocol. Are you sure you ONLY have ftp access? Almost anything else would be a better alternative for making backups.

yes only ftp
Yes I checked this. Only ftp, because they are a little paranoid. Ok I'll try it with ftp. Is it possible to do this with a php or .sh script for using with an cronjob? Because I think i cannot use cronjob with gui ftp programms.
Any clues links or help?
thx so it is late have to go to bed cu

gFTP is a gui interface for FTP downloads, It downloads folders recursively recursively, and it comes with fedora core.
Im not advocate for them or something, I just used it a couple of times and it worked, so IF your looking for a gui ftp downloader on fedora core, you might aswell use that...
