From BASH, "Play <filename.wav>" gives obsolete oss interface message

I have cron jobs which use PLAY depending on certain conditions. Seems its obsolete, even though I have the latest eveything. Whats the way a funky young whippersnapper would do it, rather than a crumbling old fuddy duddy like me whos obviously way behind the times please?

I used playwave instead of play (make symlink if necessary) and my problems were gone (through OSS I had funny distorted sound, ALSA gave good sound).

Currious...I stayed using PLAY and just noticed after several weeks of doing it no error messages. There have, however, been several Fedora up2date runs. Guess someone fixed it their end :-)
