For those with the FC4 super slow problem
 

The problem is a bug in gdm, updating with the latest version in the development tree will fix the problem.

Cool beans. What version and where ?

with what method? yum, apt, up2date ?

I just got my system back up and running with FC3 again. Not sure I really want to chance it on FC4T1 again, but
who knows, perhaps I'll get bored and give it a shot. I would like to see the new version of Gnome!!!

Is it that much different?

gulo - if you are going to try and use test versions you should set up a separate partition for that os so you can dual boot it. . . that way you don't have to depend on it :-p

i did notice that gdm_binary was taking up as much as 80% of my cpu at times. but it pretty much is running fine and I have not update gdm yet. .. I am doing the development tree in sections so if anythign craps out I have a better idea of what is causing it.

I used up2date in console. My yum wasn't configured for the development tree. I can't remember the exact version.

I just got it working late last night. Give me a day or two to comment on Gnome.

Welp, GDM no longer takes 80% of my cpu up at any given time and its running great, after I updated the kernel I think it detected my sound (either way after one of the 400 updates sound works) although not flawlessly. FC4 seems to be looking pretty good at this point from where I am standing, some quirkes here and there.

Divx and MP3 Support
 

From what I understand fedora will never actually support Divx nor MP3 support straight out of the box. But I thought I would ask the question anyways ;P
So.. is fedora core4 going to support them with out any updates or installs?

So I think you get sorta partial divx support. . whatever the players default installations can support cause I played a COUPLE divx files but most would not. . . . def. no mp3 support (been that way since RH9 I think) But its real easy setup a freshrpms repo or a livna repo and do yum install divx4linux xmms-mp3

I installed xmms-mp3 from the FC3 ppc livna repository and it worked on FC4. . .

for those interested in new Gnome only try garnome to install it separately :) I don't know how because the garnome readme needs a free weekend :)

I 'm using FC4

I got the same problem with a huge cpu occupation with syslogd and gdm.
My solution was first, on the login screen, choose a terminal fail safe.
edit the /etc/initab and change the 5 to 3.
This disable X to be launched at the system startup.

i had to édit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to had a correct resolution, using the defaults i.e "800x600" "640x480" i did not manage to see the 2 launch panels.

secondly, i tried an update though up2date , i got an error.
i managed to update my system using yum: "yum update"
but this time i got dependencies problems with libFlac libOgg etc. i went around this by first,
update yum: "yum install yum"
then i removed flac: "yum remove flac"

Then i managed to update my system, after all i installed back flac.
