Unhappy For the life of me I can't install epel

I'm running whatever is the latest version of Fedora release (I installed it like 5 days ago), and I chose the server options.

(I'm in 32 bit. And I've barely done anything yet. I'm in runlevel 3, no gui yet.)

$ more /etc/fedora-release
Fedora release 26 (Twenty Six)

$ sudo yum install -y epel-release
Last metadata expiration check: 0:21:53 ago on Sat 11 Nov 2017 03:22:28 PM EST.
No match for argument: epel-release

Tried:

$sudo wget http://download.fedoraproject.org/pu...6-8.noarch.rpm

(came down fine)

]$ sudo rpm -ivh epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm
warning: epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm: Header V3 RSA/SHA256 Signature, key ID 0608b895: NOKEY
error: Failed dependencies:
fedora-release conflicts with epel-release-6-8.noarch

(which I got from here: )

https://www.tecmint.com/how-to-enabl...el-centos-6-5/

I tried:

yum repolist 2>&1 | grep epel

I tried:

sudo yum repolist 2>&1 | grep epel

(no results)

which I got from here:

https://unix.stackexchange.com/quest...ow-in-repolist

Again this is naked fresh install. What should I do?

$ more /etc/fedora-release
Fedora release 26 (Twenty Six)

thanks,
rw

From the FAQs
Quote:
EPEL (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux) is a volunteer-based community effort from the Fedora project to create a repository of high-quality add-on packages that complement the Fedora-based Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and its compatible spinoffs, such as CentOS and Scientific Linux.
Everything in the EPEL repository should already be available for Fedora. What packages do you want to install?

Oh wow, great, I'm trying to install xfce. I was going by this:

https://www.hiroom2.com/2017/07/26/centos-7-xfce-en/

I guess I'll just try the next line

$ sudo yum groupinstall -y "Xfce"

right?

I'll in a couple minutes after I get off this (damn) conference call,

thanks, michaelk (btw I'm a "Michael K." as well haha!)

It should be still possible to add EPEL to Fedora - I have EPEL7 on F26 x64. Looks like I did it for geany originally.
Don't know about getting it functional on 32-bit though. Hopefully michaelk is right and you'll never need to.

Oh bloody hell I finally installed it and when I ran it, it died saying it requires opengl 2.1 or later.

uuhrghrghhhiojeotiubja damnit.

Now I have to figure out how to update opengl. I bet it won't even do it, all whiney about my hardware or whatever.

aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh

Do not follow RHEL or CentOS tutorials for Fedora. They won't work! Follow only Fedora 26 specific tutorials. michaelk posted an excellent Fedora-specific tutorial in post #4. Undo any steps you took from the RHEL/CentOS tutorial and then follow michaelk's advice.

Yea, that's what I did. It installed fine.

But it won't run, claiming the opengl 2.1 issue above.

Here's the log if it's useful for anyone here:

Have you tested any other Linux distros on your hardware, to see if it is capable of running Xfce desktop? I'd recommend at this point to download and test a Live DVD or Live USB of a user-friendly Xfce distro such as Xubuntu.

I just browsed through your post history, and I think I figured out the problem: Your hardware is a low-cost, barebones computer from 2005, and likely does not meet the minimum hardware requirements for Fedora 26: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/f26/r..._Overview.html

I'd suggest to upgrade your hardware if your goal is to run Fedora with a GUI desktop environment.

That's very much true. I actually had no problem running it (well, same model), with a (CentOS) install and KDE for the past five years.

I have a question: Can you run Fedora 26 with a GUI on a Raspberry Pi? Last I heard, you can. My hardware's as good.

Thanks,

rw

My fault... just installing the xfce package does not automatically enable a GUI session or login manager.
As root or sudo

systemctl enable lightdm (to enable the xfce login manager)
systemctl set-default graphical.target (to automatically start the GUI at boot)

To define the default desktop put a single line
in the file /etc/sysconfig/desktop

DESKTOP=XFCE

Just tested on a VirtualBox VM using a server network install. Old Hardware could be a problem.

Yes you can run Fedora on a Pi
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Archi...M/Raspberry_Pi

If you are still running CentOS 6 then yes it should work fine on old hardware. It is still running a 2.6 kernel, older desktops and applications versus Fedora 26.

Thanks man, it failed again, ok here's the log:

Oh and I should point out that /etc/sysconfig/desktop didn't exist, so I making a new file. I think I can guess why it didn't. Anyway, here it is:
