First updates with Yum over 1GB Fedora Core 5
 

Hi all

I have installed Fedora Core 5 64 bit on my home desktop. I only have dial up in my little town and when I do a yum -y update there is over 1GB of updates. I have left the computer going but there is no way i will be able to keep phone line tied up for probably 2weeks why it trys to download that.

I see there is a respin of Fedora Core 5. Would this be what I should get to get around this update problem. Then I see it is bit torrent so I still have to use home computer with dial up to download torrent.

If I just stop yum after say a couple of days would it update what it has already downloaded or would I have to start again from scratch.

I have been using Ubuntu on laptop for last four months and wanted a different distro on desktop to enhance my learning of linux. Still very much a newbie so look forward to any help you can give me.

There's no reason you need to download every available update all at once.

Your best bet, especially with dial-up, would be to pick and choose those downloads that you need or want to immediately install.

Using yum via command line, just list those particular updates you want to get in a line, e.g., yum update file_name1 file_name2 file_name3, etc. You can list as many or as few programs as you want.

If you stop yum in the middle of downloading everything at once, I'm pretty sure nothing would update and you'd lose whatever you had downloaded up to that point. You'd have to start over from scratch. It would be better, in your case, to download and install updates in small and manageable increments.

When I was on dial up, I did " yum info updates >updates.txt
Then you have a list of updates with a brief description, gives you a chance of making a sensible choice.

My yum update crashed last night. Got 80Gb of good stuff and a fraction of firefox. Yum saves it's downloads in /var/cache/yum I cd into the saved packages directory, then installed the updates with rpm. Not sure how well it's worked yet but it looks OK
