Firefox Search box not working, so I deleted it, & now I can't install it again.

Somehow I was able to see Opera, and could use the Search bar/box but I can't use it the same way for Firefox in Linux. Firefox is fine in Windows, but not in Linux, so I decided to delete it and install it again. But it doesn't work.

What do you mean by "can't use it the same way"?

trien27 10-17-2010 08:17 PM

I meant I can't type in a search term and press Enter in the search box. These few days, I could only go to yahoo.com but nowhere else using Yahoo search engine. I could only go to wikipedia.com but nowhere else from Wikipedia search. I can only go to facebook.com & nowhere else via Facebook search. I can do this in Firefox in Windows, I can do this in Opera in both Linux and Windows. But I can't do it in Firefox in Linux.

So nothing appears when you type?

Or does nothing happen when you press enter?

GrapefruiTgirl 10-17-2010 08:22 PM

It sounds like you removed the little search-bar from the user interface. If so, to put it back: right-click an unused area of the Firefox UI up around the address bar or toolbar somewhere; in the right-click menu that appears, select "Customize". From the box that appears, drag the search-bar up onto the tool-bar or address-bar somewhere, and then close or select "Done" on the customizer dialog.

Does this fix it?

trien27 10-17-2010 08:54 PM

GrapefruitGirl, you're wrong. I didn't remove anything before I decided to uninstall Firefox in Linux. What you suggested might have worked BEFORE I uninstalled Firefox.

So nothing appears when you type?
I couldn't type in anything besides the search engine names per search engine and nothing else.

Or does nothing happen when you press enter?
Nothing happens even when Enter is pressed.

I've sought online and this guy has some program lines to somehow put into the existing page source. Which isn't possible on my end, If I'm just a user, not the administrator of the webpage!!!

I just want to reinstall Firefox. Nothing else. Please. It keeps giving me errors, so I gave up somewhat and came here.

GrapefruiTgirl 10-17-2010 08:59 PM

Yes, having re-read the thread, I now see I misunderstood the problem- and still don't understand it. I'm going to read it again.

trien27 10-17-2010 09:06 PM

GrapefruitGirl, it's my fault. I have mislead everyone by typing too fast. The "it" in the subject should stand for "the Firefox browser", not "the search box" on the right hand side.

GrapefruiTgirl 10-17-2010 09:17 PM

No problem.

What Linux OS are you using? Fedora?
What method did you use to remove Firefox?

You should be able to remove and install Firefox using your package manager. I'm not that familiar with Fedora's package manager so I won't speculate what command(s) you need to fix up your packages and repair Firefox. Maybe a Fedora user can help out there.

In post #6 you write:

In this case, what exactly is "it" that gives you errors - the browser, or the package manager, or something else? Please show the exact errors you see, along with the commands that produce them, by copy+pasting them here for us to see. It really helps to see the errors, to figure out what's wrong.

I find it very hard to believe that it will only let you type i.e. "Google" but not anything else.

If you mean the gray text, then that's not typed in, it uses a completely different mechanism of getting the text in.

So even if you focus it, typed letters don't appear? Or does it not focus in the first place?

"I find it very hard to believe that it will only let you type i.e. "Google" but not anything else."
Never had I once put "Google" in my posts. I HATE Google. It never gives me what I need to find, but other crap. So, therefore, I never use it. I prefer other search engines instead, like Yahoo & etc...

Ok.I just found that Firefox still exists in my system even thought I seemed to have deleted it.

Now, I still can't type in the search bar.

But another question. I can't find where Firefox is located for me to make a link to the panel & Main Menu. I can use grep & find, but it doesn't tell me the exact location of where Firefox is located. Can someone please tell me? I can also get Firefox when checking email via Evolution email.

Thanks.
