Firefox 1.5.0.5 on FC5
I am attempting to install the latest Firefox on FC5. (Comes with 1.5.0.1---latest is 1.5.0.5)
When running the .0.5 version it goes looking for libstdc++.so.5 Aha!! I've solved this one before. Problem is that I cannot find where FC5 keeps libstdc__anything. I assume that v 1.5.0.1 also needs it??
Any ideas?
More general question: Test-driving several distros lately--eg PCLinuxOS. Often, I find distros that have more current versions of apps than does FC5---do they purposely hold back a bit?

I was going to say, try the search for files utility, I've just done that and came up with 2 versions.
libstdc++.so.6 and libstdc++.so.6.0.7 both in /usr/lib
But then I see you're a senior member, and would already know this, so does this mean that firefox hides it's own libraries somewhere????

I think you need compat-libstdc++-33

"Senior" has a double meaning here.....
The fact is that I did not know how to use the "find" command correctly. I was using it because I am put off by the "friendly" GUI search tools in FC5.
So why does Firefox 1.5.0.1 use lbstdc++.so.6, but the later version wants .so.5??

The plot thickens...
I just found that the automatic update feature is disabled in firefox 1501 (part of the stock FC5 install) . Does that mean that someone does not WANT me to have the latest version?

Well, maybe they just want you to upgrade through yum (you run it periodically, right?)? Look - from a distro keeper's point of view: ff is installed somewhere where only root should have access. Firefox should be run as root. What is the point of having auto-update on? Also, if you manually update, you real system will not match rpm database. By the way, check if really yum will help.

It seems like Firefox from mozilla.org is probably built with gcc 3.x and thats why it needs compat-libstdc++-33. Adobe Reader and RealPlayer also seem to have this dependency. Fedoras own Firefox is probably built with newer gcc so does not require compat-libstdc++.
