File to find released version of Linux OS
 
I am using Linux Fedora Core 5,
I would like to know the file which contains the released version of OS and Distribution name.

The file (with the Red Hat family) is /etc/redhat-release, for example;

$ cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS release 4.3 (Final)
