file-roller would read .rar files FC4
I have livna unrar 3.5.4 installed
but file-roller won't use it.
"archive type not supported"
I can command line / mc with unrar and things are fine.
Time to check mime-types?

Have you tried to update file-roller? Actually I never had problems with rar<->file-roller.

The latest version of GNOME is 2.14. Update to it, and the problems will solve (I think I had problems with gnome 2.10, may be )
