FedoraCore 3: Invalid ELF headers

Hi. I am running FedoraCore3 on a DELL Optiplex 270 with a brand new hdd.

I came in this morning and the machine was frozen. I rebooted, and got this error message:

Code:
fsck: lib/libblkid.so.1: invalid ELF header
Error while loading shared libraries
i looked through some forums and found a post that said i should add "ide=nodma" to grub.conf.

i went through the fedora3 rescue menus and got to the shell where i added that line. (not sure if in the right spot tho, i added it to the top of the file after the comments.

that didn't seem to do anything. can anyone help? (i am pretty new to linux)
thanks a bunch.

I got to the shell, and tried to replace the rpm (e2fsprogs-1.38-0.FC3.1.i386.rpm), but i couldn't get it to install over the corrupted one. i get this:

Code:
error: can't create transaction lock

does anyone have any ideas? i am going to have to reformat/reinstall soon.
