fedora vs. redhat?
 

Last night i started downloading fedora and i was all happy that i was going to install it today until i ran into a bunch of problems. After messing around with it for 5-6 hours, i am starting to realize....I MISS REDHAT!!!

Fedora is the "test cycle" for redhat. While 99% of the linux world dis-agrees with me on this, a distrobution's test cycle isn't stable, that why its a test cycle.

I'm sure to get flamed, but I used to be a redhat fan. I used it all the way to 9.0 (shrike) and once it went fedora, everything just broke for me. I switched to SusE because my professor at college uses it, but now Novell has broken that. Since I was lookin for a new distro, I went with gentoo. I'll admit it sucks to compile a day and a half just to get a working desktop, but I don't imagine that gentoo is going to sell out or destroy their own distro.

Sorry about your luck, try out all the new distros and see if one of them meets your needs. Debian, slack, gentoo, or the new Ubuntu for starters. I've not tried Ubuntu, but it seems to be getting a lot of positive feedback from what I've read.

Why don't you try Redhat Enterprise Linux. If you don't want to subscribe to RHEL you can use RHEL clones like CentOS or whitebox and lineox.

I was a redhat fan, too and i am used to it and i know where all the configuration files are but after downloading fedora 10 times (because i thought the problem was getright, splitting the file into 4 files to download) and i tried the dvd version just to see if it would work, and it didn't. Anyways, i dont want to pay $180 right now, if i had that much money i would buy Intel instead of AMD :). Anyways, i think i am going to try other distros, it'll be good learning experience i guess.

RHEL clones are free so you don't have to pay anything for them, though it would be nice to make a donation. CentOS is particularly good and quite a few web hosts are now using it instead of the official RHEL.

i have been working with linux and i believe red hat is the best available option. theres no problem with fedora core 1 0r fedora core 2 . i had my problems with fedora core 3 so i remaines on core 2. if u really want to take windows like linux where there is nothing to compile go for MANDRAKE 10.0 its the best avaible resource i believe

Uh, there are known issues with Core 2 and a few Asus motherboards. The installer won't allow you to start the install because of this. It is known but they don't give a rats *** and told me politely, tough snot.

I still don't understand why redhat had to stop supporting redhat but anyways thats not the topic... I installed Redhat 9.0 and got almost everything to work and then i decided to try debian on my laptop and actually like it very much. I have to learn some stuff but the help is out there, you just have to look for it. Idk if mandrake fixed their problems, but i tried it 4 yrs ago and i hated it, thats why i went to redhat.
