Fedora Vs. Redhat

Whats the difference between the fedora core(yarrow) and the other redhat distros? is it better/worse or what?

teval 11-15-2003 08:07 PM

RedHat Linux is discontinued. They decided to not support desktops anymore, and they recommended the UK gov't use Windows not Linux. I'm definitely not recommending RedHat for anyone who needs a server anymore.
Fedore is a spinoff from RedHat Linux, that's only helped by RedHat, they don't give it that many resources so it's worse.

If you use the current RedHat, soon you won't be able to upgrade, as rpms will start to not be available for it, because it's basically discontinued. That's unless you are confortable with tarballs.
Still, look into switching to a different distro. Gentoo, Debian, Slackaware, SuSE are all very good. Debian has a new installer now, that's a new plus :)

I really don't understand why they did that...
It really sucks, they didn't even think of the poeple using RHLinux(RH RPMs discontinued...), they *must* switch, no choice.
It's the favorite Distro of many people, it's now dead 'n' gone, + Fedora isn't up to the challenge.

Fedora sucks... Sad but true...

Why does it suck ? It is almost identical to RHL 9.0 ..... only more up-to-date ...
.... sort of a new release with litte changes of RHL 9 you could say

It's full of bugs,
They don't have much Q&A now that RedHat isn't pumping nearly as many resources into it.
Read the osnews article.
A lot of the programs don't work well togeather.

raid517 11-16-2003 09:51 AM

Well you beat me to that one. Fedora is an attempt by red Hat to stop people bitching - when in reality they trully have abandoned the Red Hat Linux desktop project.

Like that article said, Fedora is a test bed for Red Hat Enterprise, so what you have, what you will always have, is a beta, unsupported unstable Red Hat linux version. If you are happy with that, then that's up to you.

Personally.. I would never use their enterprise.
What this shows me is: "We.. well... weren't good enough to handle desktop systems, and decided to give up. Ohh.... can you buy our Enterprise Edition?"
Riiighht..
Can't see why companies would use it.

R@LF 11-16-2003 11:29 AM

I agree, that the Enterpse Edition is a bommer.
A beta ? ... well not so bad isn't it ? Most Linux distributions are ( more or less ) !!
I run RHL 9 on another machine, but it is always in maintenance for some reason.
... and I am not the only one considering this list !!

Anyway .. I sort of like it that way.... it only gets better !

Okay guys, first off: the osnews review is a bit off. I have Fedora and what is this with RH RPMS being discontinued? Fedora is still very much controlled by RH you just do not get support or boxed versions anymore and a new name. RH included yum in the distro and up2date supports apt4rpm and yum. There are fedora repositories, look for them. Fedora is still a nice product and I have not encountered any bugs yet but even if they're are (i'm sure they're are) its version 1.0 don't forget that. its pretty solid for a 1.0 distro.

WHAT? No more RedHat...
What the hell im i going to use now?

Which distro is most similar to RedHat?

I am not fully up to date, but will i be able to upgrade RHL into Ferdora or i should find new distro to use?

jasonmcneil0 11-16-2003 03:51 PM

i cannot believe this news. I just got my Redhat 9.0 box workig the way i want it. So i am assuming the wisest thing to do would be to go to Mandrake 9. i heard it was very similar, is this true??

Quite similar in terms of graphical installer, tools, rpm, etc. Mandrake has a few extra quirks and some other annoyances (ie. the menus). In all its a good distro and what i started with. SuSE is a *very* nice distro to switch too if you really do not even want to try fedora.

lokee 11-17-2003 02:06 PM

You know, the fact that they stopped doesn't annoy me, it wouldn't have been a problem to switch to Fedora... but they dissed Linux as a desktop OS, and that's just inacceptable...

Because they did this stupid act, I'll never use a redhat distro anymore, and I won't propose it to my friends either.

teval 11-17-2003 03:50 PM

Not only that.. to add insult to injury they recommended the British gov't continue to use Windows. They specified that Windows is a better desktop OS then Linux.
