Fedora version i686 for 32 bit pcs does not work
ok so i stayed up all night to download fedora and then just to find out that i wasted a cd .
because i burned it and then i wanned to boot into it with the default settings and it seemed like all serious and that it was going to boot but my pc just restarts ( when i say pc i refer to my laptop , but its easier to write pc ) so i thought ah well all right let's try it in a vm and there it says it can;t find i dont know what header for what and whaaat ... but i think it should work because the cd boots and shows me the groob menu it has on the cd .. my hardware is linux compatible because i ran knoppix , ubuntu and linux mint just fine on this pc , though had problems with sound , but that wuldnt be such a problem to cause a system reboot right .. so please help .. any ideas ... |
Well... The obvious question is "do you have an i686 processor"?
|
well i'm very confused with cpus.
i know i have 64 bit, but i have a slow connection and like that when i download it to be able to use on all computers , so i always click to download the 32 bit version . So everytime i got ubuntu , linux mint, knoppix , mepis ... etc they were 32 bit i386 , but with fedora it doesn't have this i386 option , only i686. and the i386 is a dvd image , which i don't want because i have a slow connection . so what can i change in the iso image's initrd or the kernel linuz or whatever so it can be on my laptop and on others .. i use ubuntu 10.04 ... if that helps/. |

OP: When does your computer reboot? Do you get any error messages? Show all error messages. Verify that your download is not corrupted. |
Did you verify the checksum before you burnt the ISO?

i don't think it's from the 90's anyways , here is what happens : i get the bios , i select to boot from the CD . It loads the nice grub screen where it lets me select some of the options it gives . i leave it 10 seconds so that it boots with the default settings. after that , it gives me a black screen for a few seconds and seems like it's going to load the kernel and it restarts . Doesn't give me any error at all. As for the checksum ... i don't know how to use 'em. |
If you have a corrupted ISO it will never work.
|
it sounds like the graphics issue
fedora has had some problems with some built in chips ( seeing as this is a laptop ) there is a built in chip in it. now what is it ? intel? ati? nvidia? and it's make and model and number # and also what make and model is this laptop ? |

maybe giving you the name of the laptop would help : GATEWAY M6848 - the one with 4GB RAm EDIT : @lazlow thanks a lot for the link . as i saw figuring out the checksum was too hard i decided to get it through the torrent. i'll let you know what happens EDIT 2: the video is intel and these are specifications Video controller: Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 Up to 384 MB of Dynamic Video Memory EDIT 3 : it seems like it was a corrupted iso , because the one i had before didn't even run in a virtualbox ... so i think that this new iso i got with the torrent will work on my laptop too (i tried it in a vm and is working ) Thank you all for being so kind . I would have never thought i would get a corrupted iso .. i'm to trustful in technology it seems .. |
